Fortville Food Pantry
Jesus said, “For I was hungry, and you gave me meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink…truly I say unto you, in as much as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, you have done it unto Me.” (Matthew 25: 35-40)
Participating with the Fortville Food Pantry is a wonderful opportunity to be a doer of God’s Word concerning these words that Jesus spoke when He was on this earth. The Fortville Food Pantry is an outreach ministry of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Fortville. We, at New Life Christian Fellowship, volunteer on the 2nd Tuesday of every month with carefully filled grocery bags. We have given “Breakfast bags”, “Cleaning bags”, “Supper in a bag”, “Snacks in a bag”, and many other types of bags.
We prayerfully consider what items God would have us place in the bags because the heart behind this ministry is His—He knows what the people need, and He desires that His people show hospitality and serve in love. We shop for the items, pack the bags, and volunteer at the Fortville Food Pantry on the 2nd Tuesday to hand out the bags, serve cookies, help the patrons carry their food to their vehicles, and help in any way to assist the men and women running the Pantry every Tuesday from 1:00-3:00.
There are many opportunities to serve in this ministry:
Shopping—We purchase 30-34 of each item, and we usually have 7-10 items in each bag. The Church provides the money for the shopping.
Packing—We store the items in the church, and need someone to come in and pack the bags before they are taken to the Food Pantry.
Transporting—We need someone to pick-up and transport the bags to the Food Pantry at 1:00 on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. This job involves lifting and carrying the bags to your vehicle and helping unload them.
Baking—We need volunteers to bake cookies and bring them to the church the Monday before the 2nd Tuesday of the month. We like to serve the cookies as the patrons wait for their turn to go through the food line.
Volunteering—We need people to commit to serving from 1:00-3:00 on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. This job entails serving cookies, carrying grocery bags out to vehicles, and letting the light of Jesus shine through you as you love and serve.
Creating—We like to have a verse, a bookmark, a magnet, or something in each bag that encourages and uplifts the receiver of the bag. We need volunteers to create 30-34 Scripture creations to place in each bag.
Praying—Everyone can do this. Please pray that as God’s love draws the hearts of those who receive the bags, the recipient’s hearts will desire to draw close to God in a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Finally, we have boxes of food with menus and recipes in the locker in New Life’s kitchen labeled “New Life Food Pantry”. We have filled these for the purpose of anyone who is in need.
If you would like to volunteer for any of these opportunities, please talk with Scott or Carol Sauter.
