For Sale…A Land Called Paradise

Oh how we have become consumers in every crack and crevice of our lives. The marketing ploys of our western culture have bombarded our minds with deceptive schemes that have no relationship with truth. According to the sound bites, all we must do to find joy is to purchase their product. There words are bold and self-assured. But their results are always shallow and disappointing. The cream that was supposed to grow hair on that bald spot just led to an itchy, blotchy mess. Your head now radiates red in a fashion that makes Rudolph jealous. And that 800 number you were to call for their infamous “money back guarantee” has been disconnected or is no longer in service. It doesn’t take much to realize that their claims are fraudulent and they are out to take advantage of you for their own gain.

From the beginning this story has been lived out over and over in every context. Now I don’t know that Eve had a bald spot, but she did have a blind spot… and insatiable desire for more. And my, wasn’t that serpent crafty. “Did God really say…?”

The evil marketer that his is, Satan offered her the deal of a lifetime…for just $19.95 (and of course her soul) she could purchase Paradise. In the end, Eve dialed the 1-800-number and the rest is history.

From the very beginning of mankind, Satan has been hard at work in an effort to deceive and to destroy. His good at what he does. He can take the murkiest swamp and make it look like Paradise. His promotional flyer appears to show a wonderful place with a great view. But once we write the check and make the trip to claim our Paradise we find nothing but fraud and disappointment.
There is a weakness in our humanity that causes us to always want a bargain. We want the positive result without any investment. We desire the best things of life and we want them for pennies on the dollar. In the end, Satan always stands there with his fingers crossed; with a wink in his eye and a buzz toy in his extended hand, promising this time will be different. How gullible are we?

Peter tells us to be watchful, for the evil one is on the prowl seeking someone to devour. Open your eyes, O Christian. The deceiver is at work repackaging an inferior product and selling it for an astonishingly high price. And the results are always the same…emptiness and brokenness.

Because the world has changed the packaging has changed as well. But the results never change.

Lie of the enemy- God’s way is old-fashioned and irrelevant. Satan is at work convincing people that God’s way no longer works. God’s call to purity and righteousness is still relevant today. God has not become old-fashioned, rather we have become rebellious.

Lie of the enemy- The wisdom of man has now risen to the place that it is superior to the wisdom of God. Put simply, most people think their opinion and logic is right. And when they think differently than God, they think that God must be wrong. How arrogant of us. “There is a way that seems right unto man; but in the end it leads to death.”

Lie of the enemy- God’s justice was abolished at he cross and now grace is enough. Satan wants you to apply grace to your life in such a way so that you believe it to be a license to sin. Confession without repentance is dangerous to the soul. Jesus said, “I have come not to abolish the law but to fulfill the law.”

Don’t fall for Satan’s schemes. Stand upon the Word of God and recognize a counterfeit when you see one. God’s way is still, and always will be, best.
